No. Thumbtack and Homeaglow are two separate, independently owned companies with different founders, headquarters and investors. Thumbtack is a venture-backed San Francisco marketplace for local pros. Homeaglow is an Austin-based cleaning platform controlled by its co-founders. Neither has publicly named a shared AI vendor, and the public evidence shows no common system.
The question comes up because the two brands do cross paths. Homeaglow keeps a business profile on Thumbtack's own marketplace, and both companies have ties to Anthropic's Claude. But a listing and a common software supplier are not the same as shared ownership. MCAFax reviewed press releases, court filings, engineering blogs, job postings and regulator records to map what is public and what is not.
Are Thumbtack and Homeaglow the same company?
No. We found no parent company, cross-ownership, merger, acquisition or announced partnership linking them. Thumbtack, Inc. was founded in 2008 and says it is headquartered in San Francisco. Homeaglow, Inc. is a Delaware corporation whose principal place of business is Austin, Texas, according to a May 11, 2026 complaint filed by the Washington State Attorney General.
The likeliest source of confusion is that Homeaglow is a seller on Thumbtack. A Homeaglow profile in Thumbtack's Austin house-cleaning category advertises "$19 for your first 3 hours" and, when MCAFax checked on Oct. 8, 2026, showed a 3.1-star rating from 196 reviews. That makes Homeaglow one of the many businesses that use Thumbtack to find customers, not a branch of it.
Who owns Thumbtack?
Thumbtack is a privately held company co-founded by Marco Zappacosta, who remains CEO, along with Jeremy Tunnell, Jonathan Swanson and Sander Daniels. It describes itself as a remote-first company and lists a network of about 300,000 local service businesses.
Thumbtack has raised money from well-known venture and growth investors:
- A $100 million round in 2014 led by Google Capital (now CapitalG), with Tiger Global, Sequoia Capital and Javelin Venture Partners participating.
- A $150 million round in 2019 led by Sequoia at a valuation of about $1.7 billion, with Baillie Gifford participating.
- A $275 million round in 2021 led by the Qatar Investment Authority at a $3.2 billion valuation, with Blackstone Alternative Asset Management and G Squared joining existing backers, according to TechCrunch.
In April 2026, Thumbtack acquired StreetFair, a Charlotte startup built around neighbor recommendations. Terms were not disclosed. Thumbtack also bought home-management startup Setter in 2020.
Who owns Homeaglow?
Homeaglow was founded by Aaron Cheung and Xiao Wei Chen. Washington's complaint describes it as "a closely-held corporation controlled by" the two founders, with Cheung as CEO and Chen as COO and president. The state also named ABAP Partners, LLC, an Austin entity the complaint describes as a Homeaglow subsidiary that provides services under an intercompany agreement.
Homeaglow grew out of Homejoy, the cleaning startup run by Aaron Cheung's sister, Adora Cheung, that shut down in July 2015. Forbes reported in January 2016 that Aaron Cheung, Homejoy's former vice president of growth, emailed old Homejoy customers to announce Homeaglow.
Homeaglow also does business under other names. Washington lists Dazzling Cleaning, Cozy Maid, Bubbly Cleaning, Dapper Maids and AT Maid, and says homeaglow.com and dazzlingcleaning.com are "nearly identical" websites. So Dazzling Cleaning is not a former name that was retired. It is a brand Homeaglow still operates.
On funding, be careful with database profiles. Some list Homeaglow as having raised about $39.7 million from Y Combinator, Andreessen Horowitz and Redpoint, with rounds dated 2012 and 2013. Those dates predate Homeaglow and match Homejoy, which TechCrunch reported raised a total of $40 million, including rounds led by Google Ventures and Redpoint. Homeaglow's current job postings describe it as "Bootstrapped" with "No liquidation preferences. No distracting investor pressure." We found no announced outside funding round for Homeaglow.
What AI does Thumbtack use?
Thumbtack has been unusually open about this. Public sources show several layers:
- Consumer AI experience. On April 30, 2026, Thumbtack announced an AI-powered experience that lets homeowners describe a problem by text, photo or voice. Zappacosta said, "By embedding AI into our core platform, we're empowering homeowners to manage projects with more certainty from start to finish." The company said it would roll out to all users in 2026.
- ChatGPT. In October 2025, Thumbtack said it was building an app inside ChatGPT with OpenAI's Apps SDK, following a test with OpenAI's Operator agent.
- Claude. On April 23, 2026, Thumbtack announced an integration that lets U.S. Claude users find and compare Thumbtack pros. Its press release also cites earlier work with Amazon Alexa+.
- Internal models. A December 2024 engineering post says Thumbtack ran open-source models such as Llama 2 on its own infrastructure and accessed external vendors "like OpenAI" through a layer that scrubs personal data.
- Content pipeline. A Thumbtack engineering post on its "Workbench" system says it produced 800,000 landing-page descriptions for about $13,000. The production run used OpenAI for both writing and grading. Claude was tested as an extra judge.
What is not public: which model powers each feature of the new homeowner experience. Thumbtack says it uses LLMs and that models are swappable, but a full vendor list for the consumer product is not publicly disclosed as of Oct 2026.
What AI does Homeaglow use?
Much less is public. Homeaglow's homepage, checked Oct. 8, 2026, says members "Get matched with certified and background checked cleaners." It does not say AI does the matching. We found no Homeaglow press release, app-store description or company statement claiming that AI matches or manages cleaners.
The evidence that does exist is about internal operations:
- A Homeaglow job posting for a Director of Operations Technology & Automation says the role will "own the automation, technology, and AI integration" for more than 1,000 customer-facing agents. It mentions HubSpot and Aircall as vendors and leaves open whether to buy AI tools or build them in-house.
- A case study published by Knode, an AI sales-coaching vendor, says Homeaglow uses Knode to analyze sales calls.
- A Feb. 12, 2026 case study by observability firm Honeycomb describes a Django and GraphQL codebase. It quotes VP of Engineering James Baxley saying engineers "work with tools such as Claude to build tests."
So the claim that Homeaglow uses AI to match or manage cleaners is unconfirmed. Cleaners do complain online about automated deactivations and penalties, but those posts do not show what technology is involved. Which model vendor, if any, powers Homeaglow's matching or customer support is not publicly disclosed as of Oct 2026.
Do they share investors, people or technology?
Investors. We found no common investor. Thumbtack's backers include Sequoia, Tiger Global, CapitalG, Baillie Gifford and the Qatar Investment Authority. Homeaglow says it is bootstrapped. One coincidence: Alphabet-affiliated funds backed both Thumbtack (Google Capital, 2014) and Homeaglow's predecessor Homejoy (Google Ventures, 2013). Those are separate funds, and Homejoy is a separate, closed company.
People. We found no shared founders, executives or board members in public records.
Technology. Both have publicly linked themselves to Anthropic's Claude, but in different ways. Thumbtack sells through Claude as a distribution channel and tested Claude as a grader. Homeaglow engineers use it as a coding assistant, according to a vendor case study. Thumbtack's production content system runs on OpenAI and Google's BigQuery. Homeaglow has not disclosed its AI model vendors. Using the same off-the-shelf tools is common across the industry and does not mean the two firms share systems or databases.

What should customers and workers know?
Homeaglow subscription billing. On May 11, 2026, Washington's attorney general filed a complaint and a consent decree in which Homeaglow agreed to pay $2.25 million. The state alleged that ads for a $19 cleaning did not clearly disclose a $59-per-month ForeverClean membership, a six-month minimum and early-cancellation charges of more than $100. Under the decree, Homeaglow must clearly disclose terms and make canceling as easy as signing up, according to the Whatcom Business Journal. Earlier, Pennsylvania settled with Homeaglow for $30,000 over similar membership disclosures, according to Truth in Advertising (TINA.org). In September 2025, TINA.org asked the FTC to investigate and reported nearly 3,000 FTC consumer complaints and an F rating from the BBB at the time. Homeaglow told TINA.org it "strongly disputes the allegations." As of Oct. 8, 2026, its homepage still says members who cancel in the first six months pay full price for the first cleaning.
Homeaglow cleaners. Homeaglow treats cleaners as independent professionals who set their own rates. A 2023 federal case, Hovis v. Homeaglow, alleged that cleaners were misclassified. The court sent the claims to arbitration. TINA.org has also questioned the company's earnings claims for cleaners.
Thumbtack pros. Thumbtack's BBB profile listed 911 complaints and an A rating when checked in October 2026. The BBB notes complaints about pros being charged for leads that did not turn into jobs. A 2025 federal case by pros over lead charges, Turbin v. Thumbtack, was sent to arbitration in October 2025 and voluntarily dismissed in July 2026.
Practical points. Before booking any discounted cleaning, read the membership terms on the checkout page and save a copy. Check which company you are actually paying, since Homeaglow also bills under other brand names. Thumbtack's Homeaglow listing says hires made through Thumbtack are covered by Thumbtack's money-back guarantee, while bookings made directly on homeaglow.com follow Homeaglow's own terms.
