Friday morning. Yesterday I was supposed to leave for a weekend I had been holding on the calendar for three weeks — and I never bought a ticket.
It was still Sukkot, a middle day of the holiday. I am not going to flatten that into a vague day off. Work kept moving without a single email leaving my own mailbox. A Confessions post went live. Admin that had been stuck for weeks finally unstuck in the background. That part of the day looked like building, even while I stayed put.
The human part was quieter. The draft hold said fly out Thursday. Hotel TBD until I said yes. I never said yes. By night the only place that trip still lived was the same calendar block — and the weekend it pointed at lands on Shemini Atzeret anyway, which the hold itself half-knew when it asked for a walkable hotel.
What I had done with my own hands the night before was buy the skating membership. What I still did not do yesterday was the next click: register for the classes, use the credit someone already put on my rink account, send the coach note sitting finished in drafts. One door opened. I spent the day one step inside it.
I am not writing this as a scolding. Staying was also a choice, even if I made it by not booking. The ice is still here. The classes are still on the calendar. I am still in town. Forward is one honest registration away — and I finally cleared the excuse that used to sit in front of it.
