$10K for founders 29 and under, and 3 grants close this week

Four grants closing soon: $10K for founders 29 and under, an Alabama HBCU pitch, up to $20K for a New Orleans storefront and up to $10K in Albany.

Four wax-sealed envelopes rest beside a brass hourglass with nearly all its sand drained on a dark wooden desk.

You're 29 or younger, you have a startup, and you have until Saturday. That's the whole entry ticket for a $10K pitch prize pool in Maryland. They ask for a one-minute elevator pitch and a short executive summary, not a 40-page plan. It's one of three grants on this list that close this week, Oct. 15 to 17.

The other two: a free Alabama pitch competition where you pitch with no slides at all, and up to $20,000 to turn an empty storefront in downtown New Orleans into your shop. A fourth, up to $10,000 for a storefront facelift in Albany, New York, closes the week after.

Grants are competitive. Treat each one like a lottery ticket you earn with careful paperwork. We opened every official page today. If a number below doesn't match when you click, trust the page. They're listed by deadline, soonest first.

1. Activate Downtown Build-Out Grant (New Orleans)

  • Amount: a 50% matching grant on eligible build-out costs, up to $20,000 per project. It can cover interior build-out, ADA access, electrical, plumbing and HVAC needed to open, storefront doors and windows, signs, exterior lighting, and security upgrades. Furniture and fixtures don't count.
  • Who qualifies: property owners or business tenants taking over a ground-floor space inside the Downtown Development District boundary that has been vacant for at least one year and faces the street. The work has to be tied to a new tenant build-out after July 13, 2026. National chains, franchises, and businesses with more than 10 locations in multiple states are out. Tenant space can't be bigger than 10,000 Square feet.
  • The catch: you need proof the space sat empty for a year (utility, leasing or tax records) and proof you control the space, like a proposed lease or a signed letter of intent.
  • Deadline: October 15, 2026. Send the completed application to stronger@downtownnola.com. Winners are notified November 2.

2. HBCU Business Pitch Competition (Alabama)

  • Amount: a share of $20,000 in cash prizes. First place is $4,000, second $3,000, and third $2,000, and there's a cash award for the top scorer at each topic booth. Teams traveling more than 25 miles can get a $50 travel stipend.
  • Who qualifies: students, recent graduates within the last three years, or faculty and staff at an Alabama HBCU. Compete solo or as a team of up to 4. An idea or a side hustle is enough. It's free to enter.
  • The catch: no slides and no audio or video. You get 3 minutes to pitch and 3 minutes of judge questions, in person at Topgolf Birmingham on October 29, with a full day of training built in. If you filled out the earlier intent-to-compete form, it doesn't carry over. You still have to apply.
  • Deadline: October 16, 2026. The application takes about ten minutes. A virtual info session runs October 14 at 7:30 p.m. Central.

3. NextGen Pitch Competition (founders 29 and under)

  • Amount: $10,000 in total cash prizes, split among the top three.
  • Who qualifies: any founder age 29 or younger.
  • What you send: founder and company info, your traction so far, a short executive summary covering problem, solution, market and plan, and a one-minute elevator pitch.
  • The catch: 20 semifinalists are named October 22 and go up for a public vote through October 28. The top vote-getter gets one of the 10 live spots, and judges pick the other nine. Finalists pitch for 3 minutes plus 3 minutes of Q&A at the NextGen Summit at the Gordon Center for Performing Arts in Maryland on October 30. Final scores are 60% judges and 40% live audience. The pitch page doesn't list an application fee. General admission to the summit itself is $20.
  • Deadline: October 17, 2026.

4. Small Business Facade Improvement Program (Albany, New York)

  • Amount: up to $10,000 per building, as a dollar-for-dollar matching reimbursement. The grant covers up to 50% of the project, paid after the work is finished and approved.
  • Who qualifies: independently owned small businesses and not-for-profits in the City of Albany with 25 or fewer full-time-equivalent employees, registered in New York State and current on taxes. Property owners can also apply on behalf of a qualifying tenant. The space has to be first-floor with street-front access. Money covers storefronts and entrances, exterior signs, lighting, windows, awnings, exterior paint, brickwork and more.
  • The catch: you need the full project cost available up front, including your match, before you apply. You need written consent from the property owner, and you have to stay put and maintain the work for at least two years.
  • Deadline: October 22, 2026 at 3 p.m.

Before you apply

A real grant never asks for a processing fee, a gift card, or your bank login to "release" the money. None of the four above lists an application fee on its official page. If someone cold-calls you about a grant you never applied for, hang up. Don't pay for a list of grants.

Pick the one you actually qualify for. A tight, specific application beats ten rushed ones every time.

Verified on each official page: October 10, 2026.

Check any broker against our member-built database, send cease & desist letters from your own Gmail, and build the paper trail. Some laws, like the TCPA, put statutory damages on illegal calls — whether they apply to your calls depends on your situation, and business lines get less protection than home ones.
