Most USDA rural business grants are never paid to a business. Rural Business Development Grants go to towns, tribes and nonprofits, which then help local firms. USDA's REAP program can fund rural small businesses directly, but USDA says it is not taking REAP grant applications right now. So where can a rural owner apply today?
Grants are only one option. See every way to fund your business.

Why USDA money usually reaches you through someone else
| USDA program | Who can apply | Status on October 14, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Rural Business Development Grants (RBDG) | Public bodies, federally recognized tribes and rural nonprofits. For-profit businesses and individuals are not eligible. | Application window closed |
| REAP renewable energy and energy efficiency | Agricultural producers and rural small businesses | Not accepting grant applications; loan guarantee applications accepted |
RBDG money can pay for training, business counseling, feasibility studies, incubators and revolving loan funds that serve small and emerging rural businesses. Ask your town, tribe or local nonprofit whether it runs one. See the RBDG page and its rule at 7 CFR 4280, Subpart E.
REAP is for renewable energy systems and energy efficiency upgrades, such as HVAC, insulation, lighting and refrigeration. Projects must sit in rural areas of 50,000 residents or less, and businesses must meet SBA size standards. Watch the REAP page for the next grant window.
In rural grants, the question is who applies, not just who benefits.

Here's a hypothetical.
Here's a hypothetical. Ruth and her son run Cold Hollow Maple Works (a made-up business), a Vermont sugarhouse in its sixth season. They want a reverse osmosis unit. They apply to Working Lands before December 10. They also ask the USDA state energy coordinator when REAP grants reopen for a more efficient evaporator.

- USDA reminds applicants that SAM.gov registration is free.
