Which funding is best in 2026? Usually the cheapest one you qualify for. In 2026 that order is grants, an SBA-backed loan, a line of credit or term loan from your own bank or credit union, a community lender, then equipment or invoice financing. A merchant cash advance belongs last. We rank product types, not lenders, and nobody pays us for placement.
How we compare: by product type only, using SBA and CFPB descriptions. We do not rank lenders or brokers and take no referral fees for anything on this page.

How to pick the best option for you
Start with three questions (SBA: 5 simple questions):
- How much do you need, and what is it for?
- How fast do you need it?
- How will it get repaid -- from future sales, from a specific asset, or from customer invoices?

Microloans come through nonprofit intermediaries (SBA: microloans). CDFIs are certified by the Treasury's CDFI Fund to serve underserved markets (CDFI Fund).

What "best" lists on other sites don't tell you
Many rankings earn money when you click or apply. The order may reflect who pays, not what is cheapest for you. Compare these yourself: total dollars repaid, APR, fees, term, payment schedule (daily, weekly or monthly), collateral and any personal guarantee (SBA: loans).
How to compare two real offers
Worked example (made up, not a quote): "Hollow Pine Bakery," a fictional business, is offered a $50,000 merchant cash advance at a 1.35 factor rate. It repays $67,500, so the cost is $17,500, or 35% of the advance, paid back over a few months. Put that next to a bank or SBA-backed offer quoted as an APR (SBA: loans).
- Get every offer in writing, with the total amount you will repay.
- Convert each offer to an APR so they are comparable (cost of capital calculator).
- Ask whether an application triggers a hard or soft credit inquiry before you agree to a hard pull (CFPB: what is a credit inquiry).
- Read the full contract, including fees, the payment schedule and any personal guarantee.
To find SBA lenders, you can use SBA Lender Match (SBA: Lender Match) or talk with a local SBA resource partner for help comparing options (SBA: local assistance).
