If you qualify for a business loan and can wait, the loan is usually cheaper and safer. You get fixed monthly payments and know the total cost up front. A merchant cash advance is faster and easier to get. But it usually costs far more and takes money out daily or weekly. In 2026, compare both offers in total dollars repaid.
The short version
| Point | Business loan | Merchant cash advance |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Money you borrow and repay | Usually written as a purchase of future sales |
| How the cost is stated | Interest rate or APR | Usually a factor rate |
| How often money comes out | Usually monthly | Usually daily or weekly |
| How fast it funds | Days to weeks, longer for SBA | Often within days |
| What the funder looks at | Credit, time in business, financials, sometimes collateral | Mostly sales and bank deposits |
| Builds business credit | Often, if payments are reported | Often not |
| Who it usually fits | Owners who can wait and show paperwork | Owners with steady sales who need cash fast |
When a business loan is the better pick
Pick a loan if you can wait, your tax returns and bank statements are ready, and you want a payment you can plan around. Options include a bank term loan, a line of credit, an SBA 7(a) loan, an SBA microloan, or a CDFI loan.
SBA says it plainly: "The maximum loan amount for a 7(a) loan is $5 million." Use SBA Lender Match on SBA.gov to connect with participating SBA lenders. See the SBA 7(a) page for eligibility.

When owners take an MCA instead
The bank said no, credit is thin, or the money is needed this week. Before you sign, check:
- The total you repay
- How often money comes out
- Whether a reconciliation clause lowers payments in slow months
- What fees come off the top

The daily-payment problem
A loan payment comes out once a month. An MCA payment can come out every business day, even in a slow week. Cash leaves before you can pay rent or staff.
Here's a hypothetical. Maple Row Cafe is a made-up business. A rainy week cuts its sales, but the daily debit keeps coming. The owner takes a second advance to cover the first. Now two debits hit each day. That is stacking, and it usually makes the squeeze worse.
How to compare an MCA offer and a loan offer in dollars
- Write down the amount you actually receive after fees.
- Write down the total you will repay.
- Subtract the first from the second. That is your dollar cost.
- Note how long repayment takes. Convert daily debits to a weekly total so you can set it beside a monthly loan payment.
- Ask each provider for an estimated APR in writing.

What some state regulators now require you to be shown
Size matters for the rules below. An SBA 7(a) loan can go up to $5 million. New York's disclosure law covers certain commercial financing up to $2,500,000. So a deal above $2,500,000 sits outside that New York threshold, while it can still fit under the $5 million SBA cap.
The New York State Department of Financial Services adopted its Commercial Finance Disclosure Law regulation on February 1, 2023. It appears as Part 600 of the state's regulations. It covers sales-based financing and explains how providers calculate the finance charge and APR.
The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation lists total funds provided, total dollar cost, the term or estimated term, the method, frequency and amount of payments, and prepayment policies. The recipient signs the disclosures before the deal is final.
Wherever you are, ask for the disclosure in writing.

FAQ
Is a merchant cash advance a loan? Usually not legally. It is typically written as a purchase of a share of future sales, so its cost is shown as a factor rate.
Which is cheaper, a merchant cash advance or a business loan? A business loan, in most cases. Compare the total dollars repaid on each offer to be sure.
Why would anyone take an MCA instead of a loan? Speed and easier approval when a bank says no or credit is thin. Check cheaper options first.
Does an MCA help build business credit? Often not, because many providers do not report payments to business credit bureaus. On-time loan payments usually can. Ask the provider.
How do I compare an MCA offer to a loan offer? Compare the amount received after fees, the total repaid, the dollar cost, the weekly cash out, and an estimated APR in writing.
Can I get an SBA loan instead of an MCA? Maybe. SBA loans take longer and need more paperwork. SBA Lender Match on SBA.gov can connect you with participating lenders.
What should I do if I already have an MCA and want a loan? Look at refinancing the advance into a lower-cost loan once you qualify, and read the payoff terms in your contract first.
